At Christmas time I often spend the quiet moments reflecting on the year, reflecting on past Christmas’ and some of their uniquely special moments.

I’ve been thinking about my Gramma this Christmas. As a small child, my Gramma lived just a hop, skip and a jump away so I have many memories of being at her house, playing in her woods, eating her freshly baked apple pie and bread. I have many memories of just being around Gramma in a very natural, everyday sort of way.

Me & My Gramma - Around 1977-78

Married at 15 and the mother of 5 she spent her life giving care to her family; 3 generations of people – her own children, her children’s children and even her grandchildren’s children. She fed them, laughed with them and sent them out into the world to be something. Is anything in this world as enduring as a mother’s love?

When I was about 17, my Gramma gave me 3 silver dollars taped into a Christmas card. I don’t know why but it almost breaks my heart to think of it now. Someone who has nothing frivolous to give had to give something. She had to give something when giving nothing would have been just fine. I guess it can be said that my Gramma gave everything she had.

For Christmas this year I received what could only be described as one of my most favorite-est presents ever; a Leg Lamp.

In December one of our family traditions is to setup our little Christmas village. We’ve got churches, town hall, a skating pond and my favorite a radio station. Putting it up and arranging it just right is something we look forward to each year.

On Monday school was closed because of the snow. “Snow Day.” Those two words are like magic to a child. Chloe and I spent part of the morning sledding down the snow pile that the plow made at the end of our driveway. A perfect start to a surprise day off.

snowday!

Too much snow for the buses to get through.

I usually post my Heart and Sole photos on Fuzzygalore.com but this one is for here too, I think. I spotted this Love on the Eve of Christmas Eve. I was walking along, minding my own business and there it was. Love just waiting for me.

Watching Luna barrel outside, rabbit hopping though the deep snow is great. As soon as she gets out into the powder, she is a puppy again. At 10 years old after playing for a while she gets stiff when she comes inside. She circles around the house looking for a nice warm spot to curl up and make some z’s until it’s time to go outside again.

When we got up on Sunday morning we found that the snow elves had deposited nearly two feet of fluff in our world. Few things excite a kid like the simple pleasure of playing in the snow. We quickly got our snow clothes on and headed for the door. Chloe stepped out first into the powder.

When Chloe finished up her Christmas list one of the final touches that she added was “snow”. Looks like old St. Nick came through ahead of schedule!

Last Night Before the Big Snow

Chloe Wished for Snow for Christmas

As we walked through the streets last night at around 8:30, our toes were covered in snow. This morning when we woke up the world had been blanketed by nearly two feet of fluff with a few more inches expected. Way to go, Santa! You made one little person extra happy today.

The First Snow of the Season

Today the first big snow of the season began to fall. We put on our snow gear and headed out into the night for a walk around the neighborhood. There is always something peaceful about the freshly falling snow at night. It is so nice to walk out in the world when everyone else is tucked away in the warmth of their houses. There were no cars on the streets, no other people walking; just us three and one snow dog strolling along.

First Snow of the Season

Chloe went to bed with excited talk of what the snow will look like in the morning. Snowballs, snowmen, sleigh riding – a Christmas-time Sunday in the snow. That’s what the dreams of 8 year olds are made of.
